Ozaukee County Draft Riots
On November 10th 1892 there occured in Wisconsin one of the first draft riots in the United States.
On the morning of the 12th, the draft enrollment officer, William Pors, went to the county courthouse to begin work. A mob appeared, dragged him out, and threw him down the steps. He promplty fled and hid in the basement of the post office. The mob the marched on Pors' home and several other nearby houses, wrecking and starting small fires in them. Then the crowd paraded through town shouting, "NO DRAFT!" while looting shops (including bars and pubs) and destroying buildings. Threatened with the destruction of their own buildings, a number of townspeople were persuaded to join the battle....
A newspaper (Milwaukee Sentinal) account of the riots includes this interesting quote - "appeared to belong to a class of Germans or Belgians called Luxemburgers - not an Irishman was to be seen in the crowd." Perhaps we can guess the nationality of the author!

ELMER 'DALE' MUSTAIN
MASON CITY - Former Mason City businessman Dale Mustain, 69, of Warsaw, Mo., died Friday, April 5, 2002, at his home after a 27- year battle with heart problems.
He was born July 23, 1932, in Slater, Mo., a son of Marshall and Nora Evelyn Mustain Foster. On April 11, 1953, he was married to Mildred Louise Shoemaker, who survives in the home.
In 1957, Mr. Mustain moved his family to Mason City, where he owned and operated Mustain Radiator Service. With his son-in-law, he expanded the business to include a commercial sandblasting and painting service. In 1985, after three open- heart surgeries in which he received 10 artery bypasses, his continuing health problems made it necessary to close down the business.
He and his wife returned to Missouri in 1991, where he began building a home. In 1992, he was placed on the heart transplant list but he never received a new heart.
In 1998, he underwent an experimental laser heart surgery (P.T.M.R.) at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. This surgery had not been FDA-approved and he was the first one to have the procedure done at St. Luke's. He gained four more years on his life and hoped that the knowledge the medical field gained from his surgery would be a help in extending the lives of others with heart problems. He lived to finish his home.
Mr. Mustain served in the Army and in the Marines during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged. He enjoyed working with his hands and cooking. He was always smiling and uplifting to be around. He lived, not just existed, in spite of his medical problems.
Surviving are a son, Keith Mustain and his wife, Colleen, of Neenah, Wis., and formally of Mason City; daughters Carol Feistel and her husband, Dick, of Kaukauna, Wis., Teresa Mustain and David Francis, of Sheffield, Diane Wagner and her husband, Bill, of Mason City; his mother, Nora Evelyn Mustain Foster; sisters Helen Dickson and her husband, Lawrence, Sharla Thompson and her husband, Donnie, all of Marshall, Mo.; sister Nettie Frances "Judy" Masters, of Warsaw, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, David, in infancy; his father, Marshall Mustain; his brother, Albert, and his step-father, Ralph Foster.
Dale was cremated. Memorial services were held on April 20, 2002, at the Temple Baptist Church in Marshall, Mo. A memorial open house will be held later in Mason City; the date is pending. Burial was in Wisconsin.
Former businessman Dave Murphy paid Dale the highest compliment when he said, "Mason City has lost an honest businessman" when his failing health no longer made it possible for him to continue to operate his business.

Workers buy Appleton Papers
Employees complete $810 million deal that turns them into owners
By JOEL DRESANG
of the Journal Sentinel staff
Last Updated: Nov. 9, 2001
"It's a unique opportunity to reap the benefits out of the profits that this company has made for years and years," said Sally Feistel, a sheeter operator in Appleton and vice president of Local 7-0469 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union.
For the employees - in Appleton; Portage; West Carrollton, Ohio; and Roaring Spring, Pa. - "it's just another benefit of their hard work. That's what they're looking at," Feistel said.

It's a gamble on paper
Employees at Appleton Papers Inc. invested much of their retirement savings to take over the firm
By JOEL DRESANG of the Journal Sentinel staff
Last Updated: Nov. 10, 2001
Appleton - After meeting a series of potential buyers for their company, employees at Appleton Papers Inc. decided that they didn't like anyone as much as themselves. And so, last December, following the off-the-cuff suggestions of several workers, Chief Executive Officer Doug Buth asked Appleton Papers' foreign-based owners to consider a buyout by the employees.

'I just look at it as an opportunity to maybe be able to retire a little better off than I would have proir ro this,' Sally Feistel, sheeter operator and union vice president
ESOP advocates emphasize the philosophies of employee-ownership such as how it distributes a company's profits among its laborers and how workers become more responsible by taking ownership.
But for Sally Feistel, a sheeter operator at Appleton Papers for 18 years, participation in the ESOP is a practical matter.
"I look at it as instead of paying our owners, we're paying ourselves, and I think for the most part everyone has felt like owners anyway," Feistel said. "So I just look at it as an opportunity to maybe be able to retire a little better off than I would have prior to this."
"That showed the company - and we've always had a good relationship with the company - that, yes, the union people are committed to it," said Feistel, who is vice president of Local 7-0469 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union.
